Child psychologists and potty-training experts say discipline is the wrong approach

When two local police officers said they brought their 3½-year-old son to a city holding cell on two occasions last year, investigations were launched into the legality of the action and what impact it had on the child.

Setting aside the unusual circumstances, though, what happened leaves more common questions parents face every day: When it comes to potty training, what works? Is discipline an option? And can some forms of discipline result in trauma?
